Seema was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) and spent her formative years in the cities connected by the Golden Quadrilateral – Calcutta (Kolkata), Madras (Chennai) and New Delhi (still New Delhi). She is an unabashed city rat, who loves the great open spaces, the mountains and the sea, jungles and the simplicity of rural life, as long as she does not have to inhabit any of them for overlong periods. A lifelong academic, she holds a degree in English Literature, two Master’s degrees – one in French from Jawaharlal Nehru University and one in Didactics from the Dipartmento di Scienze del linguaggio, Università Ca’ Foscari, Venice – an M. Phil in Italian from the University of Delhi, and has cleared NET with a specialisation in French (she has not used it till date, but completed it to prove a point).

She has written and directed plays, acted on stage and on screen, anchored TV shows and conducted over 500 quizzes. A Bharatanatyam dancer who had her public Arangetram aged 7 years and 11 months, she gravitated towards jazz dancing in her thirties. As an undergrad student, she sang ad jingles and provided backing vocals for the 1993 Tamil/Telugu/Hindi film 'Thiruda Thiruda' for one AS Dileep Kumar (now perhaps better known as AR Rahman!).
